Hmmm. Here's what I've noticed after watching all these. All the games are very much the same. Very similar. Nothing too different between them. And maybe that's just me. But what jumped in my head is this: People bitch today about so many games being similar, like being "another FPS" or "another shooter." And yet, many games back in the day shared the similar theme, but to a far worse extreme. From now on every time I see a comment like that or if I have genre fatigue, I'll remember how far games have come and how diverse they really are. It's a good time to be alive in the gaming world.

In regards to the Japanese/American things, I think there was a massive change in Japan's culture after the American WWII occupation.

Truth. Heck, pretty certain America* is directly responsible for a large portion of their laws, censorship and porn laws in particular. As I understand it, stuff like tentacles arose specifically out of the censorship stuff because they didn't have to censor it as harshly as actual penises (penii?). Heck, that's possibly a lot of why Japan is known for so many fetishes, due to a combination of the censorship and the idea that "well, tentacles are alright, what other things are OK?". But maybe I'm giving too much credit to the censorship there.

(Of course the other things America had massive influence in were stuff regarding government and military...as I understand it [that is to say: very poorly. I might be completely wrong about most of this stuff] America basically either wrote directly a large portion of their laws, or held a giant nuclear gun to their head to ramrod lots of specific laws into place).

*I originally had "we" as the word here, but America ain't everyone, so I fixed it.

For most people, things always seem better in retrospect through nostalgic eyes.

I had heard the difference with kai is that they don't talk about powering up their new move for 5 episodes before doing it.

Man, really enjoyed the discussion about the games and the ROM talk in general. Good stuff gents. I was glued to the entire thing. Not a bad sendoff for the collection.

So much this. Love hearing Jeff and Brad riffing about the intricacies of gaming history. This was a kickass QL.

Wow, I had never thought about the 1942 thing until Brad mentioned it. Super weird.

Yeah, I went to Japan for a few weeks a couple of years ago and thought it was a little weird seeing a big display for Call of Duty: World at War at a game store.

The United States help rebuild Japan after WWII, though the whole Matthew C. Perry thing was sort of the first American interference in Japan, and that era has plenty of complicated baggage with it. Overall, American (and British to some degree) culture has bled over to Japanese since the end of the war. For instance, the whole punk era/movement from London and NYC had plenty of influence on Japanese rock bands and fashion.

There's always been a weird relation with the west and Japan (before the glory days of arcade games and SNES imports) for instance rock groups in the 60s like the Beach Boys and the Beatles having Japanese-only releases. My sister has this Beatles best-of record called Oldies But Goldies with Long John and the Silver Beetles on the back in a Japanese hotel just like that night of Persona 4 where they stayed at Yukiko's hotel.

Something I always wanted with these arcade compilations is just a money counter that would show you how much you would have spent in the arcade per session, collectively, etc... It would be pretty useless and yea you could keep track of it yourself I just wish somebody would implement it.

Nah that's actually a good idea. We got so much info about stuff more useless than this -- I'd like to know how many weeks allowance my 10 year old self would've spent to beat one of these games.

Hmm, I'm disappointed to see that Ryan couldn't join in to finish this out. But I was glad to see something that resembled a short-lived revival to the Game Room quick looks.
