@humanity: i agree. What makes it especially tough to swallow is that i watched Eisenhorn's quicklook right before this and that game is hardly any better. But since they love Warhammer it's close to the heart, while this quicklook gets treated as Hitman's malnourished cousin.

I think both games are bad, but are doing a good job presentation-wise.

I dunno. With Eisenhorn I was left thinking that they were so close to having something really cool that I'd wanna see if only they had more to work with.

I've a much harder time looking at this and seeing where it could go beyond poor mans Hitman.

Well Eisenhorn is still in development while this is a full retail product available for purchase. That said, I guess what I'm finding hard to put into words is how most of the time they go into these games with the benefit of the doubt and the jokes and tone simply shift organically throughout the Quick Look. Vinny especially is the first to try and find some redeeming qualities about the worst of games. This QL kind of rubbed me the wrong way a little because it was like the moment it started they were off to the races, with Austin turning it up to 11.

I mean don't get me wrong, it's still funny and all that, it's just they're usually a little better going about this sort of stuff where it doesn't resemble an Angry Joe video.

I lost it when Austin said "Displacer Beast" in that accent.

This looks like an old hitman game. I would actually pick it up if it was 5-10 bucks. Funny you have to carry the bodies instead of dragging them. It has something I'm missing a lot in the new HITMAN which is more locations. 50-60 bucks is laughable.

The German soldiers are definitely wearing a cap underneath their helmet that pokes through the helmet. I think what is happening is that there are two types of head wear for some NPCs to create variety but the game is glitching out and rendering both at the same time. This might also account for some of the bad frame rate.

Luckily we still have GBs QA-team hahaha, that is just hilarious.

I do agree with @Humanity that the gbeast guys seemed a bit unfair towards the game from the get go though

This is exactly the kind of jank I love, except for the frame rate stuff.

As bad/dumb as this game might be, I'm glad it exists. Nowadays everything is either an hyped up AAA franchise, some form of Indie Game or a broken Steam Early Access mess. I miss this grade of dumb AA games.

I agree with you on this one and that kind of thing usually takes away from these videos for me. I think this post sums up my feelings about this game.

For real, this game looks like hot trash, but that's all framerate and polish problems. Every criticism they waylay, from the stealth gameplay - "So you're just gonna stand around until the guy moves?"

to the 'world breaking' videogamey bullshit - Yeah, just strangle that guy, yeah, just leave your clothes on the ground -

To the UI elements that kinda suck - ALL of this is pulled directly from Hitman. Not even the old ones. A lot of these gameplay elements are present in the new hitman game, and you look past the 'wait for the opportunity' mentality because those games have a pedigree and a nuance to them. If this was a lot more polished and a lot less framey, it would be a fine-ass hitman clone.

A lot of the stuff is right out of Blood Money, which is one of my favorite games and I wouldn't mind playing something very much in that style, even with some jank. In the theatre level of Blood Money right out of the gate you can spend a whole lot of time waiting for the actors to go on stage. The performance of this game needs to be better, especially because it's not some great looking game. But yeah as a big fan of Hitman this looks good.

This game actually started out as part of the Death to Spies series, which is basically the one really Hitman inspired game out there that I can think of. Those games had their moments. It is still linked on the franchise page there I see but either way it doesn't have the name.

I'm getting flashbacks of Velvet Assassin. Which, btw, I actually enjoyed despite the GB's crew dislike. Minus the framerate issues, this game doesn't look that bad. Last gen in almost every way, but not bad.

Edit: Nvm, halfway in and this actually doesn't look great.

I watched this before the Eisenhorn QL and they sort of bag on this way harder than it deserves because it's humor for the QL when I think, other than the frame rate, Eisenhorn (even unfinished) is jankier than this. It was kind of disappointing because I think the sentiment for both games is that they could probably do more if they had more to work with but the tone for this was mostly mocking the cheap assets and forgiving for the other. It would've been better if there was some feeling at the end of at least summing up some positives or redeeming qualities amidst the faults like Vinny does sometimes instead of just the feeling of them giving up / washing their hands of it.

I love a good quicklook of a bad game. Especially if GBEAST is doing it.

Would be funny if he killed all the guards with Hats and they would all go on your hat. You get a Trophy for collecting all the hats. Terrible!

I love a Quick Look of a bad game as much as the next guy but theres something off about the whole thing when the first few seconds are like "ok let's start shitting on this game as much as we can!" I love you guys, Vinny is a treasure obviously, but ehh maybe don't lay it on so thick?

Sorry if this came off "wrong" in any way it's just my opinion.

To be fair, Alex said he had been playing this game for a bit already and had rendered an informed opinion about it. It of course happens to color the perception of the others, but the game also kinda looks janky.

@cooljammer00: Oh definitely. Game does not look super amazing, which kind of sucks because from the previews I did get a retro-Hitman vibe. There aren't enough cool stealth games.

@humanity:

I get what you are saying. I don't like when people crap on games without giving them a chance. I actually felt weird when this video started out too because I usually come to these for a pretty non-judgemental slice of gameplay.

However, when that frame rate started dropping and people started opening doors backwards I understood what they were doing.

At the point that you are asking full price for a game that is that broken they deserve to be crapped on. I worked in QA and I know that companies know about these problems. Developers want to fix them but they run out of time and the publisher says ship it broken.

That isn't fair to consumers and so they deserve to be called out for it.

I sort of agree, but to be fair, this game is terrible. I played the first mission (ended up sending it back to Amazon after that), and pretty much every part of the game is either broken or just not fun (the locking picking mini-game is cool though). I was going to review it (eventually decided it wasn't worth my time); here are the notes I made:

  • No subtitles option; subtitled in cutscenes

  • Cutscenes stuttery; compression artifacts visible; weird film effect

  • No autosaves at all

  • Weird fade to black for putting on a disguis

  • Bad translation(?) - image (GB image uploaded is having issues)

  • Colour shift as moving from indoors to outdooors

  • Only main dialogue, not ambient is subbed; mostly German audio (random English at times), mostly unsubbed

  • Zero reaction to being shot - I don't think the character model even moves; shooting is rough

  • Alert system is BAD - I'm allowed in the garden, but because a mildly suspicious guard followed me there it goes to max. for no reason

  • Single voice sample for "Heil Hitler"; heard three times in < 15s

  • Compass is indicating that my objection is above me - I actually need to go to the slightly taller building next door

  • Lock picking game is OK
  • AI is dumb - see video below

Honestly, it's difficult to come up with positive things to say about the game (other than "Cold-war Hitman should be awesome". Cleaned up, and put out at say $15, this might be worth messing with, but $50 for the state it is currently in is insane.
