Overview
Divinity: Original Sin was released on June, 30th 2014 on PC and Mac. An enhanced edition of the game, which includes additional story bits and new gameplay options is currently is released on PC, PS4 and Xbox One. This version (even on consoles) is free to players that already bought the original PC version.
The game was Kickstarter funded.
Gameplay
The game allows players to control a party, which initially consists of two characters:
- A woman who has recently been resurrected
- A condemned warrior who has suffered years of agony and torture
Additional characters can later be recruited in the game world itself (there are four story-specific pre-made characters in the game currently) or in the game's hub world. Characters recruited in the hub world can be further customized to perfectly fit the player's party needs.
During the course of the game, players will either control the characters independently in the single player mode or have separate players controlling separate characters in multiplayer co-op. Along with multiplayer co-op control, a co-op dialogue decision system (using a stone/paper/scissors mini-game based on player stats, much like that found in Star Wars: The Old Republic) will allow both players the ability to make decisions within the game's world.
Almost everything can be directly interacted with, while some objects can offer bonuses. One example is that a mushroom on the ground can be picked up and applied to a weapon in order to give it a few stacks of a poison damage buff.
The game also features a magic system that allows players to take advantage of reactive spells. As an example, if a player casts an ice spell and it freezes something, the player can then cast fire and it will cause the ice to melt. After that, the player could cast a lightning spell and it will electrocute the enemy in the melted ice water.
Divinity: Original Sin shipped with a full level editor using many of the same tools that Larian has used to make the Divinity games in recent years, and any adventures/areas/etc will be made available through direct interface built into the game for players to download and use. The world itself is far more interactive than any previous iteration of the games.
Story
The game follows two characters, a man and a woman, who are part of an organization called the Source Hunters, which is tasked with eradicating the dangerous magic known as The Source and everyone that's trying to wield or control it.
They soon uncover a conspiracy by The Immaculates, a hidden cult, that has been mining and monopolizing the dangerous mineral Tenebrium for yet unknown reasons. The cult is led by a being called The Conduit which is in command of immortal and indestructible warriors known as Death Knights.
Along the way the Source Hunters can recruit Madora, a female knight that despises all magic; Jahan, a wizard that paradoxically hates most forms of magic; Bairdotr, a ranger that was raised by a bear and Wolgraff, a rouge who is mute because sorcerers stole his voice when he was younger.
Eventually the party comes across magical crystals strewn all over the world known as Star Stones. Upon finding the first crystal they immediately get transported to a place that exists outside of known spacetime called The Homestead.
It is here they meet an imp historian, Zixzax, who has been ordered by the gods to record everything that has ever happened until the end of time. From him, and by collecting more and more Star Stones, the party learns the secrets behind the Immaculates, The Death Knights, their own past and the universe ending threat that looms over everything, known as The Void.
Thus they embark on a quest to stop the Immaculates and hinder The Void from destroying all of creation.
Kickstarter Campaign
The game's Kickstarter campaign was very successful, garnering over $940,000 against a $400,000 goal.
